On Monday, September 23, 2024, the Oyo State Association of the Deaf, in collaboration with the Association of Sign Language Interpreters in Nigeria, commemorated the first International Day of Sign Language with an advocacy walk and rally in Ibadan. The event, aimed at promoting inclusivity and raising awareness for the rights of people with hearing impairments, was a significant milestone for the deaf community in Oyo State.

The celebration kicked off with an inspiring speech by the Chairman of the Oyo State Association of the Deaf, Mr. Abiodun Kolawole. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde for his unwavering commitment to making Oyo State a safe haven for people with disabilities. “We are immensely grateful for Governor Makinde’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment for all citizens, regardless of ability,” Mr. Kolawole stated.

He also acknowledged the pivotal roles played by Barrister Ayodele Adekambi, Director General of the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities, and Honorable Timothy Olufemi, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Persons with Disabilities. “Barrister Adekambi’s paternal guidance and Hon. Olufemi’s tireless advocacy have been invaluable to our community,” Mr. Kolawole added.

The day’s activities included keynote addresses from prominent figures such as Mr. Moruf Yusuf Adekunle, Chairman of the Deaf Community, and Hon. Timothy Olufemi, both of whom highlighted the need for cooperation, awareness, and support for programs aimed at empowering individuals with disabilities.

Hon. Olufemi emphasized the critical role of government and society in promoting inclusivity, stating, “Our commitment to creating a state where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive remains firm. We must ensure that individuals with disabilities are not left behind.”

In a symbolic moment during the rally, a sign language dictionary was presented to Hon. Olufemi, who made a personal pledge to learn sign language and promote its use among his family and community. This gesture underscored the importance of bridging the communication gap and fostering a more inclusive society.

The advocacy walk, which attracted a large crowd, was a resounding success. It demonstrated Oyo State’s ongoing commitment to improving the lives of people with disabilities through active policies, community support, and meaningful advocacy.

The event concluded with a renewed sense of hope and determination within the disability community as they continue to champion their rights and foster inclusivity in Oyo State.
